How to Care for Your Skin During Colder Months

How to Care for Your Skin During Colder Months

The seasons are changing — you’ve packed your swimsuits and pulled out your sweaters, but have you thought about your skin care routine?

Cooler temperatures and drier air can wreak havoc on your skin, but winter doesn’t have to mean living with a dull complexion. Daniel Moghadam, MD, and our team at Modern Aesthetica are skin care specialists, and we’re here to help you love your skin in every season.

Follow these tips to keep your skin glowing and healthy all winter long.

Don’t: skip the sunscreen

Ultraviolet light from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer and premature aging. You should wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 every day to lower your risk of skin cancer, but many people stop applying sunscreen when the weather gets colder.

UV light can still damage your skin in the winter months and when it’s cloudy. So, remember to apply sunscreen to your exposed skin all year round, and pay special attention to your ears, head, and neck.

Do: focus on skin hydration

Cold, dry air outside and forced heat inside can quickly zap moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and irritated. Humidity levels are naturally lower in the winter too, so your skin will benefit from some extra hydration.

Take a look at your skin care routine, and make changes during the colder months to soothe your dry skin. Consider switching to a richer moisturizer for your body and your face — and don’t forget your lips! If you like at-home face masks, choose formulations that hydrate and moisturize.

Don’t: take long, hot showers

It’s tempting to turn up the temperature in your shower when the weather is chilly, but hot showers can contribute to dry skin. Hot water removes more of the natural oils that keep your skin moisturized, so hot showers might make you feel more dehydrated.

Instead, take lukewarm showers and keep them short. Use a rich moisturizer on your face and body when you get out of the shower to retain moisture and keep your skin feeling more comfortable.

Do: revitalize your skin with a facial

Even the best intentions can leave your skin looking dull and dry in the winter. If that’s the case, treat yourself to a facial at Modern Aesthetica.

Dr. Moghadam and our team offer 24K gold facials, microneedling, and even aesthetic booster shots designed to refresh your skin and restore that natural glow you’re missing.
